I have a cheap little insperion netbook with tiny, tinny, barely audible speakers. These little babies clip right on to the top of the netbook and produce a respectable (not loud, but does the trick) sound WITHOUT a separate power source. They're USB powered, which was the biggest selling point for me. I didn't want to compromise the uber-portability of a wee little laptop by plugging in a cumbersome cord or clumsily dragging along detached speakers.

It doesn't seem to make a dramatic difference in the battery life, but I'm sure there's some impact. There's a power switch, so if you don't need sound, you can turn them off and not take power without having to detach/unplug them.

The sound isn't going to blow anyone away, but it's perfect to use outside or in the kitchen (plenty audible over the fan/fridge/dehumidifier), or around the house. Now I can watch a netflix movie or hulu show or listen to pandora or npr anywhere in the house without any trouble. And the price was dandy. Yay!
